Lower School

Science & Social Studies

Science:

The goal of our science instructional strategy is for students to be challenged to discover things in the world around them and to tie those into the grade level standards of learning. The curriculum incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards and hits the strands of Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, and Life Science. Science Fusion was the text selected for the Lower School. Lower School science teachers routinely supplement science instruction by participating in programs offered through Ohio State, COSI, or by allowing their classroom to spill out into the 25-acre wooded campus of Columbus Torah Academy. Content is often integrated with other subjects as well to ensure that rich reading and writing opportunities are interwoven with science concepts.

Social Studies:

The goal for students in our social studies curriculum is to develop skills, knowledge and understanding as they work to become contributing citizens of society. It includes the strands of History, Geography, Government and Economics. This curriculum is teacher-created and integrates other subject skills. For example, 6th grade has an annual “Around the World” unit that incorporates geography, information literacy, research, writing, and presentation/publishing. Likewise, 4th grade enjoys building their class business– in order to combine real-world skills with classroom learning on economics, the students create their very own small business. Together, they brainstorm ideas, vote on a product to sell, and are divided into teams to handle different parts of the business, such as marketing, finance, production, and sales. Through this project, the 4th graders develop essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem solving, and financial literacy. Whether learning about living in community in Kindergarten or about business in 4th grade or about our global community in 6th grade, our students expand their understanding of the world around them through research, observation, and experience.
